IS YOUR CHILD OR ADULT NONSPEAKING? HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO GIVE THEM THEIR VOICE.

Spelling as Communication

Spelling utilizing a letterboard or keyboard is a form of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC). Practitioners who are trained to teach this method coach students with apraxia to learn the intentional motor skills needed to accurately select each letter. Once accuracy and a sustainable rhythm are achieved, the student learns to spell out words, and answers to questions, followed by more open answers and thoughts.

ABOUT cameron’s spelling journey

Cameron has relied on an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device for years to express his wants and needs. However, the device never quite said exactly what he wanted to express, particularly when I was responsible for programming it every week.

For the past 5 months, Cameron has been participating in spelling lessons at SPELLERS - San Diego. Through consistent weekly lessons and practice at home, Cam is learning to spell openly and can answer some known questions. He runs into the office with giggles, and his body remains fairly calm for a whole hour. Their connection is genuinely captivating.

What To Expect

To enhance the experience, spelling skills can be accelerated through consistent in-person attendance and when parents or family members also engage in practice lessons at home.

Funding Resources

  • Scholarships: Exploring scholarship opportunities, as I have, can offer additional support. Thanks to the TACA scholarship, I have recently completed CP (Communication Partner) training, allowing me to assist Cameron in communication lessons beyond his in-person lessons.

  • Communication Partner Training: Take on the role of your child’s CP (Communication Partner) allowing you to practice at home and gradually decrease in-person lessons.
